When can I do some hazard reduction burning on a farm?

The bush danger period is from 1 October to 31 March each year, and may be brought forward or extended by the NSW Rural Fire Service subject to seasonal conditions.

During these periods, before lighting fires, a permit must be obtained from your local Rural Fire Service Brigade. All landholders must notify their neighbours and the Rural Fire Service (or NSW Fire Brigades in Braidwood township) at least 24 hours prior to burning, throughout the year. A responsible adult must be in attendance at all times while the fire is burning. Appropriate arrangements should also be put in place for fire fighting.

A Hazard Reduction Certificate may be required, which can be obtained free of charge from the Rural Fire Service.

For further information, please contact the NSW Rural Fire Service, Lake George Zone Office.
