Federal and State Funding for Water and Sewerage SystemsIn an unexpected windfall, Palerang Council was given a guarantee of much-needed funding of $3.3m each from the Federal and NSW State Governments to build a new sewerage system in Braidwood. This follows lengthy debate and lobbying by Council over the past two years to replace the ageing system. The funding will ensure the replacement of the entire sewerage infrastructure including storage ponds, pump stations, pipelines, disinfection area and effluent management facilities. The Federal Government also guaranteed funding of $700,000 to upgrade the Braidwood Water Supply system. A further $1 million was guaranteed by the Federal Government to upgrade the Bungendore Water Supply system. "Council welcomes the commitments of funding pledged by the Federal and State Governments," said Peter Bascomb, General Manager of Palerang Council. "The Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, requested that the allocation is to be spent as quickly as Council is able to, but prior to June 2009. I assured him that we would be able to meet that condition," he added. Mr Nairn commented that the Federal grant had been determined before the State Government announcement and that he would be happy to have further talks with Council on the most appropriate allocation of the Federal funds.
